Accessibility: Not pram or wheelchair friendly. Rocky and uneven underfoot in places, and the occasional stile to climb.
Facilities: Public toilets can be found by the entrance to Chatsworth House and on Church Lane, Baslow. For food options, visit the Carriage House Café or the Cavendish restaurant in the Chatsworth Stables; the Tea Rooms in Edensor; one of several pubs in Baslow, or the Devonshire Arms in Pilsley.
The route
- Leave Chatsworth Car Park, passing Chatsworth House on your left and heading towards Paine’s Bridge.
- Cross the road and head right, down the public footpath ahead (not crossing the bridge). Follow this path, passing Queen Mary’s Bower on your right.
- Continue along this path, passing the Cricket Ground on your left, until you reach a metal gate, known as the "Kissing Gates". Pass through.
- After approximately 100m, go through the metal gate to your left, opposite the house on your right. Cross the field and head towards the bridge.
- Continue on, through 3 further metal gates leading to a narrow pathway towards the main road.
- At the main road tum left. When you reach the pedestrian crossing, cross over the road and continue along the pavement, heading through the Village of Baslow, passing St Anne’s Church on your left hand side.
- After the Church, cross the road again, and walk over the Bridge just before The Coop.
- Once over the bridge go up the alley between the houses straight in front of you. Climb over the stone stile, through the field ahead and over 2 more stiles, keeping the wall on your right hand side.
- When the wall ends, tum left towards the wooden gate. Pass through the gate and tum right along the tarmac lane for approximately 50m and turn left through 2 stone pillars into an open field.
- Follow the wall on your left hand side round the outside of the field and over the stone stile by the gate, heading towards the Village of Pilsley.
- Walk down the hill to the main road. Cross over the style and cross directly over the road with great care. Continue following the path, which leads steeply up hill, pass through the gate and style and tum immediately left through the field, keeping the wall on your left.
- Cross over the stone style onto the Lane and tum right, walking uphill towards the Village of Pilsley.
- You will soon reach the Devonshire Arms Pub on your left. This could be a place to take a break and some refreshment.
- Continue up the street, which becomes a track. Where the track forks keep to the left track for approximately ¼ miles, over a stone stile and through the field.
- Cross over the wooden stile by the gate and walk directly across the main road continuing up Handley Lane.
- After a relatively steep climb on a tarmac lane the road flattens, and you will have magnificent views towards Sheldon and Ashford.
- Before you begin to climb uphill again take the track off to your left down Edensor Lane.
- After approximately 1 mile you will reach the Village of Edensor. Walk through the village and head towards the blue gate by the cattle grid. Pass through the gate and cross directly over the road taking the gravel path uphill and back over the hill towards Chatsworth.
